Projects

An overview of the research projects I took part in/led

Mobirise

Thesis: Electron Energy Reconstruction

In my bachelor thesis I attempt to replace the current Bremsadder function (responsible for reconstructing the energy lost through Bremsstrahlung) at LHC by using machine learning based techniques.

Supervised by Jacco de Vries

Mobirise

Improving SLAM using CNNs

Here CNNs are used to create a 3D representation of the environment from a stereo camera. This is done in an effort to improve upon the previous project by allowing the drone to avoid objects.

Led by Szymon Fonau & Me

Mobirise

Autonomous Drone Tracking

Computer Vision is used to track humans and animals using a drone. This drone is able to autonomously follow moving targets at a constant distance.

Led by Szymon Fonau & Me

Mobirise

Particle Identification at LHCb

A deep neural network was built to test whether an addition measurement of a parameter (velocity) added any useful information for determining the difference between Kaons and Pions. This could be confirmed with significantly increased accuracy for the measurement of slow moving particles.

Supervised by Jacco de Vries

Mobirise

Search Strategies by Artificially Intelligent Agents

The search behaviour of simple larvae was recreated using a genetically evolving deep neural network. Certain movement patterns found in nature naturally reoccured in the trained neural networks and gave indications for the sensitivity of the larvae's senses.

Education

A detailed overview of my academic curriculum

Maastricht Science Programme

I am expected to graduate in 2020 with a GPA of 8.0 (equivalent to 3.7-4.0 in the US System | First Class UK System). The rest of the CV will focus on my study interests and my exact course choices.

ECTS Distribution

The bars to the right reflect my credit point distribution by subject. As they indicate, my main interests are Computer Science and Physics. An overview over the exact courses I took and the corresponding grades can be found here
In Physics I have a strong focus on quantum/particle physics, relativity and cosmology.
In computer science my focus lies on machine learning: intelligent systems and their application, neural networks and the like.

Foreign Grade Conversion:

Due to the nature of the Dutch grading system, a linear comparison can be rather misleading. To convert grades fairly one would rather look at the percentile of students achieving a certain grades as in the netherlands, 9s/10s are given very rarely as explained and analysed rather well by this article.

My predicted GPA of 8 therefore corresponds to the top 10% of dutch students - therefore a strong first class degree in the UK.

Extracurricular Work

An overview of my participation in clubs and committees

Chess Club

The chess club organises tournaments for advanced players and lessons for beginners.
It was founded in 2018 and I have been running it since then.

Academic Committee

The academic committee organises lectures by leading scientists in their field. Here I was responsible for organising lectures (especially by Physicists) and introducing the speakers. I joined in 2018 and became vice-president of the committee in 2019.
